Minister of Advanced Education Myles McDougall issued the following statement on Apprenticeship Day:
“Each year, on the fourth Monday of September, Alberta celebrates Apprenticeship Day to recognize the skilled trades professionals whose expertise helps build, power and strengthen our province.
“Apprenticeship education provides a path to rewarding, well-paying careers that combine hands-on training with academic learning. As Alberta's economy grows, so does demand for skilled trades professionals, and our government is making strategic investments to ensure Alberta has the workforce needed to keep building our province.
“To help meet that demand, Alberta's government has invested $100 million in 2026-27, doubling apprenticeship seat funding at post-secondary institutions over the past four years. We also launched the Union Apprenticeship Grant program in 2025, which supported eight union training centres and more than 1,600 apprenticeship seats in high-demand trades in its first year.
“These investments are delivering results. Alberta now has more than 81,000 registered apprentices, a record high for our province. More Albertans than ever are pursuing careers in the skilled trades and accessing training closer to home, helping ensure they have the skills and knowledge they need to enter the workforce and meet the labour market demands of today and tomorrow.
“On this Apprenticeship Day, I extend my sincere thanks to Alberta's apprentices, instructors, sponsors, mentors and industry partners. Your skill, dedication and commitment to mentoring the next generation inspire us all.
“To everyone considering a career in the skilled trades: there has never been a better time to get started. Alberta needs your talent, ambition and expertise. Together, we are building a stronger and more prosperous Alberta.”
